Over the Christmas break I spent 4 days eating to my hearts content. I think my wife is trying to fatten me up. She makes these cinnamon rolls that are to die for. She made 3 pans for 5 people. Thats a lot of rolls per person.
I didn't think about how much weight I was gaining for a second.
I want to explain why
We don't own a scale. We used to have a really nice weight and balance clinic scale, but we sold it. I weigh myself once maybe twice a year. You might be thinking this is absolutely crazy.
I have patients who weight themselves every day, and some who do diet programs weigh-in every week. And if that works for you, great. But, today I want to challenge you to a new way and maybe, just maybe a new way to do life.
See, I have been 25 pounds heavier than I am today. My wife has been 30 pounds heavier, which for many of you that have met her would find that hard to believe.
You might also find this hard to believe but I have never joined a gym and I have never done a trendy diet program.
Is joining a gym great? yea, but not necessary.
Can you lose weight on the latest diet program? yea. But, I have yet to see one without side effects. Thats why a new one comes up every year.
After a 4 day bender I thought it would be fun to check and see how much weight I'd put on. So I took a stroll over to the Planetarium (the closest place to the office with a scale) and used their family sized scale.
I hopped on it and it said 4562 lbs.
Whoa, I knew I had some extra cinnamon rolls but not that many. On further inspection, I was being weighed on the sun. That is one way to feel worse about yourself.
So it is offical, I was 6 lbs. heavier than the last time I weighed myself. You may also feel that way after every holiday. if so do you need to
Spend 10 hours in the gym? No
Do HcG? No
Juice fast? No
Do a Tough Mudder? No
Eat a Cow? No
Eat the whole garden? No
Buy bigger pants? Definitely No
IF you lead a normal healthy life, within a week or two your body will normalize back down to your regular weight.
If that is not the case for you, it can be.
Yeah right doc?
Not happening? Then your body or your lifestyle has some undiagnosed problems.
Have you ever met the woman who works out everyday for hours on end is still 30 lbs. over weight. If weight loss or health were all about portions or calories in versus calories burned that wouldn't happen. right?
I have a unique opportunity to work with a fair amount of professional athletes as a chiropractor. I can only think of two who don't have weight issues. They all work out hard.
Next week gym memberships are going to skyrocket, and that's a good thing. So, why is it that by March most of those new members aren't going any more?
Exercise is a real way to lose weight. But, what if you don't exercise for a month, will you gain weight?

#1 thing to interfere with the performance of function is damage to your spine. After a recent statistical analysis of residents of Salt Lake City exactly 10% of people know they should be going to a chiropractor to maximize their function.

This is such a critical issue that after 5 years of working with patients I stopped helping nutrition clients and supplement consultations if the person was not getting adjusted by a chiropractor. The success rates of ALL patients was so much better that I stopped helping people who weren't getting adjusted, because the frustration just wasn't worth it. If your new years goal is to get healthier and you aren't getting adjusted you are just making it harder.
#2 Organ malfunction. My wife used to be able to binge, go on a run, and poof, the weight was gone. As she's got older that stopped happening. Once we did some hormone testing and some supplements to build her back up again, 30 lbs. came off over the next year. Her weight naturally came down and she looks better than ever.
If you do a trendy diet program and lose a bunch of weight, but your hormones are off balance, it will be unsustainable. You can only fool the body for so long. A few of the programs out there actually use artificial ingredients and sweeteners. If you want off the diet roller coaster you can't keep doing this kind of diet.
#3 Toxicity. This is perhaps one the most over looked causes of weight gain. It is even less utilized than chiropractic adjustments. This is one of the reasons I won't panic about my added 5 pounds. I take a few supplements daily that keep my liver burning the garbage that comes in. The supplement Cruciferous Complete from Standard Process is one of the best cheap and easy things to take daily.

This is such a huge topic and each person will be a little different so in the beginning of January you will have more opportunities to fine tune your diet with a new program we have coming out. With readers nationwide it is no longer practical to do these lessons in person so we are starting a weekly online class on health. It should be a real, steady way to get off the diet roller coaster and never worry about a trendy diet again.
So when March comes around you aren't looking to bail on your health, but to only get stronger.
