So to continue with that theme, today's installment is about multivitamins. More specifically, the original one, formulated in 1929.
It is pretty well established that nearly everyone can benefit from the use of a multivitamin. Why? Because vitamin deficiencies can cause disease. If you look up the cause of "scurvy" you'll find that it is from a lack of vitamin C, but it is also illegal for a non-medical doctor to tell you that, because "scurvy" is a disease. How screwed up is that?
Our country has a very, very screwed up system that doesn't benefit the health of the general population. So as a result of extensive lobbying and money spent on advertising, the average American has been left out in the dark to suffer...
- ...obesity
- ...hormone problems
- ...digestive troubles
- ...heart disease
- ...and worse
Remember, I'm just talking about issues I have experienced directly with patients in practice. My favorite was a heart patient who was medicated to the hilt and progressively getting worse. After talking to him, it was obvious his body was starving for nutrients.
An interesting thing happened 4 days before his doctors visit.
He had been taking whole food supplements for his nutrient deficiencies and taking his prescribed heart medications for 6 months. All his symptoms had disappeared except an off-balance feeling.
Four days before his next medical visit he was scheduled to run out of his meds and no pharmacist would fill his prescriptions without a doctors order. Those four days were the best four days he had had in years and you probably guessed it, the off-balance feeling disappeared.
To my amazement, on his next medical visit to MAYO clinic, they documented his experiences being off his meds and how good he was feeling. I saw the hospital notes.
The real message here is good nutrition is always good for you.
Interestingly, back in the 1930's, just after the very first multivitamin was on the market, this was said by the enigmatic "Bureau of Investigation" to any one asking about it.
It "is obviously a crude piece of quackery"
"To say that 'heart trouble' is a vitamin-deficiency disease is to make a statement that is meaningless and silly"
After these statements surfaced, Dr. D.T. Quigley, a Professor of Surgery at University of Nebraska College of Medicine said:
"There is sufficient evidence to convince any thinking person that high blood pressure, apoplexy, hardening of the arteries, obesity, stomach and duodenal ulcers, mucous colitis, diabetes, insanity, and cancer and many other chronic conditions often develop on a basis of vitamin deficiency."
So, there is two sides to each story. Usually is, right?
Here is my question to you. Do you think your body will work better or worse if you deprive it of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, or other nutrients?
For a simple example, your muscles need calcium to contract. They also need other things, but somehow, your heart muscle beats from the time, before you were even born, without medications to help it along. It's funny how the body was designed to work efficiently, if it is given to proper nutrients and nerve supply.
I find it so ironic that giving the body it's basic requirements is frowned up as quackery and looked to as a last resort.
- When a patient walks in desperate and so full of problems they don't know where to turn I have two answers.
- I look for spinal subluxations interfering with their nervous system. I'm ever amazed how an adjustment can turn a persons body around.
- Second, I give them "Catalyn". The multivitamin from Standard Process. This is whole food supplementation at it's finest.
In every case, the struggling person has improved, period. Catalyn is a funny name, but a very powerful multivitamin because it is 15 specifically chosen foods that offset the most common nutritional deficiencies that exist. It is so good, that the formula hasn't changed in over 80 years. Why? It is NOT a mega-vitamin made for marketing trends and fads.
The foods are left intact. Basically, just the water and the fiber are taken out. All the natural synergists and active enzymes are left alone the way God intended. Some scientist isn't messing with it. Unless, you think you can out do God, there isn't a better multivitamin.
How much to take can be different for each person and their needs. For someone in dire straits, there is no limit. I have them take handfuls. I take this every day as one of my corner stones to good health, like brushing your teeth, and drinking water.
Here is a great story of a woman who used Chiropractic, Catalyn, and Organic Minerals to save her life.
This was specific to her needs, and not an emergency. So don't get crazy and think if you are stabbed in a back alley that taking a multivitamin will save your life. That's not what she is talking about.
In a nutshell… Dr. Altman saved my life. When I first came to Dr. Altman 6 weeks ago I felt hopeless. I’m 36 years old and I truly felt that I was dying. I was so deeply entrenched in medical problems and worries since I was 6 years old, but I didn’t care what medications I took just as long as I could temporarily feel better. After all I thought didn’t have much longer to live, even my body support this feeling.
I was lethargic, depressed, forgetful, and had pain everywhere. I was taking 2 to 10 Ibuprofen a day. I was going through a bottle of antacids per week. This was in addition to my prescription. For asthma allergies and high blood pressure, but I was still having health problems.
I was referred to Dr. Altman and after my first adjustment I felt like a new person and I could actually move around without being stiff or in pain. I was put on a special diet with supplements. Each week that passed, I was able to ween myself off, of different medications and I didn’t have any more problems with heart burn or body aches, and I have more energy and can even work out without using my asthma rescue inhaler. I even lost 10 pounds without even trying.
So, now I am down to one medication and a standby asthma inhaler, which I rarely use. A big triumph was getting off the prednisone, which I have been on for almost a year. It was indeed killing me.
No, it’s not easy avoiding food, I crave, Nor is it a simple thing to force myself to exercise on certain days, but the results are worth it. I still have work to do. But with Dr. Altman’s everlasting kindness knowledge we’ve accomplished so much in so little time, and we’ll continue to see results. I am hopeful and I feel alive. People have noticed this at work. I’d have at least 10 different people mentioned how good and healthy I look. I am and forever grateful to Dr. Altman for saving my life.”
