Spiced Breakfast Quinoa.

Rinse 3/4 cup of quinoa in a sieve.

Add quinoa and 1 1/2 cups of water to pot.

Cover, then simmer for 15 minutes.

Drain any extra water.

Add 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Add 1/4 teaspoon of cardamom.
One chopped Apple.
2 tablespoons of dried cranberries.
1 tablespoon of walnuts

Stir over medium heat for 2 to 4 minutes, or until apples are warm.

Breakfast is one of the hardest meals for people. I have an omelette almost every day but this added a little variety and a little spice.

Quinoa is best known as a gluten-free super food. One cup gives you about 8 g of protein.

If there is one thing that I wish all people would do, its stop eating breakfast cereals.

Have you ever been driving along and think

“that guy is a complete moron”?

I do it all the time, except I try and keep it in my head. It really doesn’t do much good to yell at people.

Most people are on the phone
Most people aren’t paying much attention to the world around them.

Lately, it seems to me that the race to the red light is heating up. Now ponder this for a moment, if you are passing someone only to mash on the brakes at a stop light, here are a few things you may want to consider.

  • You might need less coffee in the morning.
  • A less stressful job.
  • More roses to smell.
  • More economical car because of the gas you waste.
  • A lifetime membership to a local brake repair shop.
Ding, ding, ding the most likely cause…if none of that is possible (see below)

Peace is a very valuable word right now. We could also refer to it as patience. Patience may be the one skill to solve many problems. Patience keeps your car running better, it makes your marriage nearly unbreakable, it keeps your head cool and allows your brain to solve all your problems. 

Problem solve in 5 minutes


I can attest to the challenge many of you will have with today's exercise.

Many, many people are very stressed right now about money, their jobs, their future, and a host of other things.I understand. But trying to race around and solve problems can be counter-productive. Creativity and problem solving comes from within you, much like inspiration and health.

Some of my best newsletters are written in one sitting, because I have this flood of instantaneous creativity that I have to write down immediately.

Those inspiring moments are not while I’m watching a football game, making supper, or adjusting patients. My best inspiration comes from quiet time, in the shower, in meditation, and even in the middle of the night. Your brain works on problems all the time, but when it is so preoccupied with task after task, the solutions stay behind the curtain.

Find a quite moment every day for 5 minutes and do NOTHING but listen to your breathing, and then be amazed at the thoughts that come flooding through your brain.I can tell you from personal experience that a solution can exist right under your nose, and with the hustle and bustle of activity, it is easy to miss.

This might be harder than you think. Let me know how it goes. 

So for all of you skeptics. How tough will it be on you if you miss a red light, seriously? Is your schedule so tight you’d risk life and limb for yourself and the others around you. Try this for a week and see how you feel about red lights after that.

I get the sense you might not believe me.


All I Learned From The Ocean.

I spent some time staring at the ocean.  I have done that many times over my life and the ocean never ceases to hypnotize me.  It has the power to support life and destroy life, to create fun and pleasure and heart ache and sorrow.  

Thus goes the roller coaster of life, like the waves of the ocean.  Sometimes the bumps are small and other times they are tsunami’s.  Even the richest person didn’t get there without some trouble.  Even the most peaceful person had turbulence in their life otherwise how would you know what peace was?  You can’t avoid stress, but what you can do is let it roll through you like the ocean.

Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life and when it comes, hold your head high, look it squarely in the eye and say, I will be bigger than you.  You cannot defeat me.” -Ann Landers

If you ever go body surfing and spend anytime in a wave you realize a few things quickly.

#1 Don’t fight the ocean

After the wave dumps you and you remain stiff and struggle for the surface you are going to get hurt.  If you let your body be loose and flow with the water the energy of the wave will pass through you and your body will wiggle and shake but you won’t get hurt.  Once the wave passes you can easily swim to the surface.

#2 Don’t fight the ocean

Let’s say you want to swim towards the beach and you are Michael Phelps.  He is a pretty good swimmer.  If you get caught in a rip tide and the ocean decides you don’t need to go to the beach it will pull you farther away no matter how strong you are.  If you swim straight against a rip tide, you lose.  Think of it as swimming straight into trouble.  You can’t deny that there is a problem, because you are in it.  You probably swam into it without even realizing it.  You need to swim sideways until the current is small enough to overcome.

Some problems can be tackled head on, but large problems often require a more subtle approach.  If a large problem develops and your mind is racing and you are panicking you can’t see clearly and you are wasting precious energy.  Stress and busyness are distractions for the mind.  After a week of sitting by the ocean I noticed one thing.  People are in a real hurry to get somewhere.

Your project this week

Every day try this intro to meditation


  • Go get some sand / dirt and put it a jar and add water.  
  • Screw the top on and give it a shake.  Cloudy right!  
  • Keep shaking it until it settles.  Come on shake it harder.  
  • Just shake it in one direction so the sand will settle.
  • Not happening, right!  
  • Put the jar down and let it sit for a few hours.  It will settle all by itself.  

Your mind works the same way.  You can’t ask your mind to do a million tasks and expect it to perform flawlessly in a stressful situation.  The calm mind can be focused and solve problems very well.

 I always knew I had rocks in my head.  The easiest way I have found to be at peace with the world around me is to sit and do nothing.

 I know it sounds obvious, but try it.  Let the sand in your mind settle.  Sit and listen to your breathing for 5 minutes, every day, in a silent room. It's harder than you think.

Here's a picture of why most people need a multivitamin. I was standing
at the local Costco and the people in front of me had massive amounts of cereal in their cart.

This happens to me every time I shop. When you're shopping in a grocery store the majority of the products in there are going to be processed.

This is a picture of a fairly typical cart. We see some eggs,those are good and some cheese, that can be good. Then we see processed chocolate milk, processed bread, two boxes of heavily processed cereal, processed rice.

Now, shopping on Saturday you'll be hard-pressed to find a cart that doesn't have some of these processed products in it. This is the world we live in.

The primary reason the food manufacturers process food is to increase the shelf life. To do that, all of the natural vitamins that can go rancid are removed and replaced with artificial ones.

An artificial vitamin can act very similar to a drug. It can interfere with the natural action of a real vitamin because the structure is so similar but because it is artificial it doesn't actually do what it is supposed to do.

Think of it this way, if you go to any shopping mall and you see a complex of stores there are clothing stores, toy stores, music stores, restaurants, all kinds of shoe stores, they all make up a mall.

Now if you're in a small town and the town is slowly dying and all the stores move out, you are left with an empty mall.

You can think of an empty mall as a pretty shell that looks good on the outside but the inside is devoid of people, products, activity, and all of the things that make a vibrant mall work.

Processed food and artificial vitamins are very much like a dead shopping mall.

Every study that I've seen that compares processed vitamins to real food, the people always do better eating the real food. You can probably figure out why.

Now, the only thing we suggest to fill up your stores faster, is to take a real food multivitamin.

Eating processed food daily is pretty much inevitable for nearly everyone.
It is also one of those slow destructive forces that gets you over a long period of time. You don't eat a bunch of cereal in the morning then all of a sudden feel your heart about to explode.

One little tip for you.
If you see the words and enriched on the ingredients list you are definitely eating artificial vitamins.

I use Catalyn, the original, whole food multivitamin from Standard Process, to help my body fill up all the empty spaces. I do what ever I can to avoid processed food, but there is another reason to take a whole food multivitamin. The majority of food is raised on artificial soil. That's another topic for later.

Just something to think about. A few supplements every one should take.
 
 
I get this question a lot. As a chiropractor, it seems like a standard answer to suggest people stretch.

Patients generally try to tell me in a nice way that they would like a stretch and an exercise that will forever keep their spine healthy. I'm going to partially answer that question and probably not the way you would expect.

We have two problems in America. Number one, fitness seems to be the default answer to solve most health problems. Number two, chiropractic is only good for pain control.

US track and field people did a research study with 1400 runners. Runners are generally pretty fit people. They split the group into people who stretch, and people who do not stretch.

About 16% of both groups were injured where they had to sit out at least one week. So what does that tell us? It tells us that injury rates are almost identical whether they stretched or not.

When people come to the office they are generally injured. So we have to focus on helping them get over their injury. Most people ask me about stretches that they can do to help speed up their recovery.

Almost no person ever asks me what they can eat to speed recovery.

It's similar to driving your car into a pothole. Mis- aligning the tires. And now trying to drive more and more to realign your tires and hit the pothole just right.

The primary problem is the alignment got injured. An outside force created a problem. The pothole for the tire and maybe something like a car accident for the person.

People don't want to be injured again. So here's our dilemma, do stretch or do not stretch? 60 years of research from the CDC suggests that there really is no conclusive evidence that stretching or not stretching helps a person reduce injury rates.

Many people find this hard to believe. I don't stretch. I find that my strength is lower and my golf game is Squirrley.

Now, does that mean stretching is bad? No, if you stretch, you like it, then stretching is probably good for you. Does it change your odds of reinjury, probably not. Also, almost all injuries in the spine are not to the muscles. They are to the ligaments. If you ever tear a ligament the one thing you don't do is stretch them. If you do you run the risk if creating a sloppy joint.

Ligaments are meant to be tight. They hold your body together.

For those of you who saw the movie "doctored" this is probably a pretty easy concept to understand. The health of your body, your spine, your brain, has to do with how well it functions. There were lots of stories in the movie about people getting adjusted and eating better and changing habits and even killing off parasites to increase the overall function of their bodies back to normal.

Maintaining the health of your spine is critical to maintaining your health because every nerve that goes to every cell passes through your spine. Over the years, I've seen nearly every disease condition improved in some patient with just chiropractic. Chiropractic started as a cure for deafness because the very first patient actually got his hearing back after an adjustment.

Many years ago a medical doctor named Windsor did over 100 autopsies of people who died of organ failure. More than 90% of those that died had a rotten nerve going from the organ that killed them to a part of this spine with abnormal curvature or misalignment. I don't get adjusted every week because I'm in pain.

The anatomy of the spine actually makes it impossible for you to feel all of the damage that may have occurred during injury.

So, if you want to do more then protect your health with chiropractic and drinking more water, then there is something else you can do at home that I feel is much better than stretching. I told you we'd get to the answer.

The people who walk in with the best spines, are weightlifters. This is the most common characteristic I've seen in the last 15 years that helps keep somebody's spine healthy. I should clarify, I'm not talking about doing an hour at the gym on the weight machines in the middle of the room. These are the guys who use the free weights and generally heavier weights.

If you have a spinal injury you can't go throw a bunch of huge weights on the rack and do some squats. You're going to get hurt again. You have to go to the chiropractor and get realigned first, then when you want to prevent that from happening again, you start adding free weights to your routine. If I told you that can help you save $15,000 for the next year, even if I can help you save $5000 in the next year, my guess is I would have your attention.

I don't want you to be a day late and a dollar short.

There are two things I want you to learn today. For one, insurance is a lot like health you can't go back in time and buy it.

Number two is, prevention is 10 times easier than trying to fix any problem.

I see it in the office pretty much every week. Someone universally comes in with neck pain of some mysterious origin and after sitting and talking to them for a while we find out that they've been in a car accident 2-6 months ago.

Did you know that the inside parts of the spine actually do not have nerve endings, so if it's damaged many times you can't feel any pain.

Scar tissue sets in and over the 6 months and the spine becomes stiffer. If it goes on long enough people get hand pain, headaches, or just have a harder time getting comfortable.

Over time, people feel like they are getting older .

And easy way to tell if people need help is to watch them when they drive, and if they stop looking over their shoulder when they are in traffic they can't move there neck anymore.

So how on earth am I going to save you money.

#1 Statistically, you have a 25% chance of being in a car accident in the next four years. More than half of those people who are hurt, were in an accident less than 14 mph. Since the crumple zones of the car aren't generally activated at those speeds, the full force of the accident is transferred to the human body.

The average car accident will cost between $3,000 and $15,000 depending on how much of that damage you absorb.

If you do not have that many Benjamin's laying in your checkbook that can be written out for care for ambulances, doctor visits, physical therapy, chiropractic, and massage then you might want to call you our auto insurance carrier.

For less than $.15 a day you can get $25,000 or more of coverage in your personal injury policy.

#2. Raise your head rest. You really can't find any cars nowadays that don't have headrests and there's a reason for that.

The last time I saw a car without a headrest was watching Smoky and the Bandit. That black Trans Am didn't have one.

If you are sitting in the car and the middle of your head it's the middle of the head rest, raise it two inches, if possible.

As a person gets rear ended the middle of the back straightens out and people actually get a little bit taller during an accident and their heads go up.

The next time you get in the car you are going to want to do two things.

First call your auto agent and raise your personal injury protection.

Second you will most likely need to raise your head rest.

I guess, third, if you were in an accident in the last six months let me know and we will check your spine for you.

This has been a staple in households for hundreds of years and many of you can remember taking cod liver oil when you were kids. So where did it all go? 

I think because the taste was so awful years ago it became less popular.  In recent years it has been processed better and even flavored. It is tasty enough for my kids to even like it.

Secondly, there has been a resurgence of interest in vitamin D.  Everyone, including doctors are talking about it. Now, as you know I like natural things and one of the most natural ways to get vitamin D is in cod liver oil.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D has been shown to prevent cancer, heart disease, and autoimmune diseases. It is not without it’s trouble. It is also the most toxic of all vitamins.

Vitamin D from the sun

The amount you get is proportional to the amount of skin you expose.

The darker your skin the less vitamin D you make.

Cholesterol in the skin is made into vitamin D by the sun (UVB rays). I would be seriously concerned about the health damage from cholesterol lowering drugs. For example: Zocor interfers with and accelerates the destruction of skin cholesterol.

Skin conversion decreases as you age. For example a 70 year old makes 4x less vitamin D than a 20 year old.

As you age, vitamin D from your diet is more important.

Your skin only makes so much then it gets full and that area of skin quits making it.

Vitamin A

1. Improved hormone patterns in girls

2. Enhance immune function

3. Protect against cancer

4. Modulates inflammation

7. Lack of Vit. A screws up the lining of the small intestine.

8. Improves iodine efficacy in kids. A healthy thyroid is critical for healthy nerve functions.

Nearly every person is deficient in these. Our modern lifestyle has contributed to this along with people having a tremendous fear of fats.

The reality is that people are way out of balance. Don't believe me, we can test it for you. These handy little fatty acids decrease pain and inflammation. As a chiropractor, all of my patients like having less pain. 

Like all supplements... Quality matters

Before we get to the solutions we have to identify the problem. 
I get asked many times what vitamins are good. For a long time, I have thought about what would help people the most. So, we already covered the multivitamin, now we have to look at a major problem in society.

Toxicity.

This can be an overused word and actually can mean different things, so lets start with a basic meaning. To me toxicity, is any foreign substance in your body that doesn’t make it healthy and strong, (basically man-made chemicals).

So here we have a conundrum. We like our modern lives and conveniences, but at the same time so many of them are shortening our lives and making them less healthy.

In health, you can’t solve man-made problems with more man-made solutions.

Cancer is a good example

#1 Proof that cancer is a man-made disease.

This article from Mercola.com. It is very interesting look at tumors.

The article relates to studies of mummies and they found that tumors were extremely rare. For more, just read the article. A few highlighs from Mercola’s comments also echo our topic.

Cancers can be from:

  • Pesticides and other chemical exposures.

  • Pharmaceutical drugs (what?)

  • Processed food

  • Wireless technlogies

  • Obesity

  • Stess

  • Lack of sunshine / and using sunscreens

There are some heavy hitters in there, but we’ll focus on the toxicity ones, pesticides, medications, processed foods.

Pesticides are poisons, no matter what you call them, or how you use them. Almost ALL our food is laced with them. Unless you are searching for, and using organic foods and products, you are eating or smearing these chemicals on your body every day.

Is it really possible in America to go totally natural? Sure. Is it likely? Not really, because it is so incredibly difficult. We’ll talk about how I deal with this later.

Medications are nothing more than man-made chemicals, that force the body to react a certain way. They were originally based on natural products, but alas, there is no money to be made with natural stuff. They have their place in our world, but real health will never come from medications. It can’t.

Oh my nemesis... processed food.

It is everywhere, in almost every house, and so ingrained in our lives it doesn’t seem unnatural at all. The main problem as it relates to toxicity is the artificial vitamins mixed in and depending on the product, they are often laced with pesticides.

In the book, “The Crazy Makers” the author points out that even baby foods have been found to contain pesticides. 

#2 Trouble losing weight?

Ann Louise Gittleman wrote a pretty interesting book “The Fat Flush plan”, which in a nut shell talks about toxicity polluting up the liver and hampering it’s ability to clean itself. Interestingly, medications tend to gum up the liver as well as other chemicals.

What happens is that a “chemical” comes into the body, that could be drugs(like Tylenol), Trans-fats, pesticides, smog, solvents, or really anything artificial, and your liver is required to deal with it.

Those chemicals have to go some where?

If you can’t break them down and get them out, then your body stores them in the fat cells. You can think of your body as the ultimate police officer. When something is out of line, it cracks down. Your body can’t have a volitile band of merry chemicals roaming your blood stream.

The best case scenario is to avoid all the chemicals in the first place, but that is pretty hard to do. So, the back-up plan needs to involve keeping the liver tuned up and on full alert, and fully armed to break down the chemicals. 

Did you know that the most powerful detoxifier is an antioxidant called GLUTATHIONE.

Glutathione is made up of three amino acids; cysteine, gamma glutamic acid and glycine.

It helps the body repair cellular damage caused by pollution, stress and fatigue. White blood cells, especially T-cells, which are responsible for healthy immune system need glutathione and remain at optimal level in the blood.

What on earth to do?

To start with,

  • Use more organic products (make-ups, shampoos, lotions, etc)

  • More organic food

  • Eat Kale

  • Eat Brussels sprouts

  • Eat more greens in general

  • Eat eggs

  • Drink more water, less alcohol

The next level of prevention. Every day I encounter some form of toxicity no matter how hard I try to live a clean life. So, every day I try and help my poor liver out by eating healthy foods and taking Supplements and some herbs.

Cruciferous Complete from Standard Process is probably the easiest and simplest thing I do daily. It is Kale and Brussels sprouts in a pill. Kale is the most nutritionally dense veggie and both of these are great precursors to Glutathione production. Also, in other studies, these two have been shown to be powerful detoxifiers of excess estrogen. Women know how important that is.

How EASY is that?

There are actually many more things you can do, but this is a good easy place to start.

Last week we did a screening of the movie "Doctored" and I sent you some really cool highlights of notes that I took, but actually I have a few more.

In the movie, they did an interview with some farmers in the Midwest and their biggest concern with the food supply in America, is the lack of minerals in the soil from modern farming techniques.

It is been very well documented over the last hundred years the amount of mineral loss in the soil as farmers no longer add minerals back into the soil. they only use NPK fertilizers to force crops to grow.

The problem for you and I is if you get a traditional supermarket tomato the amount of nutrition that is in there is much less than it used to be.

In one of the books that I have, vitamin C in an orange Is 10 times less now than it was 50 years ago.

So how might that affect you, well, vitamin C is heavily involved with your immune system function and your collagen formation.

This is one of the reasons we've promoted whole food supplements for the last 14 years.

One of the other interesting highlights from the movie was the subtle but powerful comment that the rise in autoimmune diseases corresponds with the rise of genetically engineered crops.

  • Last week we had a great movie night.

    This past week has been a true blessing for me, it has been filled with new patients that have zero experience with chiropractic.

    The movie really kick started my brain to help people that have been sucker punched by a lot of misinformation about back pain and alternative healthcare.

    Here are some of the highlights from the movie I took notes on.

    Failed back surgery syndrome code.
There is actually now a billing code for insurance companies to get compensation for failed back surgery.

When the government studied back pain and found that Chiropractic was the most effective, fastest and least costly way to help people, they disbanded the panel.

Parker Jensen had invisible cancer.

I started chuckling I heard him say that and at the same time I felt completely nauseous.

If you are from Utah there is a story from the local news about a kid named Parker Jensen. He was a 12-year-old boy who got diagnosed with Ewings sarcoma.

What the local news failed to tell people was that Parker Jensen actually never had one single test come back positive that he had cancer.

The doctor actually told him his family that he had invisible cancer.

This one doctor fabricated the story about this kids cancer to fill a study slot that he happened to be doing on Ewings sarcoma.

The father was put in jail, the mother and son took off to hide from the state of Utah. The state was trying to force the kid to undergo chemotherapy treatment that he didn't need.

After five years of living hell, all the charges were dropped because the parents of Parker Jensen were correct, he didn't have cancer.

You need to see this movie.

They also show an alternative cancer center in the movie.

I was shocked to see a functioning cancer treatment center that is not sanctioned by the medical profession.

The Burnzynski institute is treating terminal brain cancer and has a wonderful success rate.

This guy is treating terminal brain cancer when all other treatments have failed. The government has tried repeatedly to shut him down and there are a number of testimonials that were in front of congressional hearings in the movie about the success of all of these patients.

He has to actually give away his cancer treatments for free just to make sure that the government does not shut him down. It will turn your stomach watching the guy from Romania talk about US politics.

I personally have a fairly old book with 50 pages of cancer cures and their stories that the FDA has shut down.

If you know somebody with cancer you have to see this movie.

There's an entire section dedicated to a mystery illness.

It is lyme disease and some other parasites.

Now, being from Minnesota, I am fairly familiar with lyme disease and I saw it almost kill one of my patients.

There's a big section of the movie on a clinic in Idaho and it's treatment of mystery illnesses that are often caused by lyme disease. These patients have been turned away by every other doctor to go home and basically die.

If you or someone you know has an illness that just won't go away or has no answers for why they have it, you need to see this movie.

See if this makes sense to you.

If your house is burning down, you are going to call the fire department.

They come with their axes and their hoses and a lot of water.

The fire gets put out. All is good.

Tomorrow your house is a charred mess. But the fire department shows up with their axes and their hoses and a lot of water.

They soak your house down once again.

You maybe thinking, wait a minute, the first half of that story made total sense but the second half of that story makes no sense.

You see in an emergency, the fire department has the axes, the hoses and all the right tools to deal with the emergency. They are the right ones to call.

Once the emergency is done they are no longer the right ones to call. You need a separate crew of guys to come in and start rebuilding.

If that starts making sense to you then you need to see this movie.

I will tell you this honestly, most people keep calling the fire department every day.

If being healthy is a priority in your life you have to see this movie.
