I have the occasional opportunity to capture a teachable moment. Since I started practice, I have a daily conflict, and I mean daily. I watch the person in front of me with a head tilt, a high shoulder, a leg that swings, or a foot that flares, and I think, how can I help them?
This is a tricky thing without sounding like a creepy stalker. I don't want a barber coming up to me on the street and saying "Hey, your hair cut is pretty bad, let me fix that."
Yeah, whatever. Now, get away from me.
So, I'm checking out of the grocery store and this lady starts tossing her stuff on the belt. My brain goes, jeez, "I wouldn't eat anything there" I case you're wondering, I was there on a guacamole emergency. (Mexican Guacamole-couple tomatoes-cilantro (chopped fine)-lime juice (squeeze from real limes)-jalapeño pepper (choose your pepper on how hot you like it) -red onion-2 avocados-salt and pepper to taste).
I figured we could have a covert teachable moment, thanks iphone. This is a good lesson in prevention. My mission for the rest of the year is to make you more proactive about your health.
Frosted Flakes, caught my attention first. Big colorful box. If I could choose one habit that I'd like all patients to change, it'd be to stop eating breakfast cereal. NO good will come from it. Only bad. This is a processed, extruded, grain laced with chemicals, sugar, and artificial vitamins. No real nutrition exists in that box.
So why is this poking the cancer tiger with a stick? The grains are full of omega-6 fatty acids that promote pain, inflammation, and bad diseases. Remember, the last article, I referenced the promotion of breast cancer with inflammation. Also, read the book "Grain Brain"
The sugar...if there is one thing that drives cancer crazy, it's sugar. Any cancer patient I meet, the first thing I tell them is to stop all forms of sugar. Besides the added sugar the grain itself converts quickly to sugar in your body. If you want to lose weight, stop eating this stuff. Eat some eggs instead.
Moving on...we have a gallon of regular milk. Now, I'm from Minnesota and specifically the southern dairy region. Milk is a touchy subject, so here are two quick cancer promotors. I can't see the label on this, so if I assume it's just a standard gallon of milk, it comes from a feed lot type scenario. Those cows are fed grains. Just as above, omega-6 fatty acids promote inflammation and all the bad things that come along for the ride.
Second, those cows are injected with RBGH. That's Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone. Basically, it's estrogen. It makes the cows big and fat. Does the same to people too. Read the book Hormone Deception. Estrogen is the prime driver of breast cancer, read John Lee MD's book from the last article. The little label says, there is no proof that RBGH is bad for you, so drink this any way. Read the book, which is amazing by the way, and you will quickly realize they are lying to you. The dairy industry has lots of $. Drink some filter water.
The bread on top, same basic problem as the cereal.
The raw hide bones, same processed food problem, just for her dog.
The soda, this is like smoking, every one knows it's bad for you, but they do it any way. The sugar just fuels any cancer issue, or the diet one in the middle, fuels carbohydrate cravings, which indirectly fuels cancer by converting those simple bread carbs on top into sugar.
The good news is that, I'll bet none of it is for her. The paper plates in the back are good indictors that these are just snacks for her football party :) So remember this little article if the next football party you go to has cereal, bread, and soda for snacks.
A little parting wisdom from one of the top cancer clinics in the US. 40% of cancer patients die from malnutrition. Everything on that conveyor belt is processed and void of nutrition. Make sure you always have some vegetables and fruit in your cart when you check out. Your body is built cell by cell by what you eat and drink.
